It was still early in the morning when Caden stepped out of the nearby convenience store and out into the chilly morning air, the sun having only just come up began to shed its light as it rose above the mountains. The sky was overcast, though the sun still managed to create enough ambient light for your average person to see without much trouble, even an occasional ray of light or two would find its way through the blockade the clouds had created.
Caden shivered as a small gust of wind blew by and he instinctively pulled his flannel jacket tighter around him for warmth, he knew the chilly air wouldn’t last to long he just had to wait it out he thought to himself as he exhaled slowly letting his eyes follow the warm breath as it swirled up into the air, behind it he could see parts of the mountains as they came into focus through the fading fog. Within seconds of exhaling his breath soon cooled and faded completely away giving him a much better view of the mountains, from his vantage point through the lingering morning fog he could just barely make out some of the rock formations and outcroppings as they jutted out of the trees, and snow further up in the higher elevations.
What a view he thought to himself, he wondered what it would be like to actually climb up to one of those higher peaks and look down, would everyone look like ants, or would he even be able to see anything with all the clouds cluttering up the sky.
Caught up in the moment Caden’s eyes seemed to loose their focus the more he thought about it, shaking his head he brought himself out of the daydream and raised his coffee up to his lips and took a sip from the cup hoping it would help him focus more. The coffee was hot which was to be expected, luckily his lips were used to the heat having drank hot coffee for most of his teenage years. When he took his lips away from the cup a small puff of steam was released through the slot on the lid, though minuscule the dance it created as it fought with the cold air would have been mesmerizing to anyone watching until it to faded away.
Oblivious to the events unfolding around his coffee Caden fought the urge to swallow his first sip letting it linger in his mouth, he knew from experience that the first sip was always the best and wanted to enjoy it a few seconds longer before finally giving into the urge to swallow. Finally after what felt like enough time Caden inhaled deeply through his nose and swallowed, almost instantly he felt a awake and more alert even though it clearly had not been enough time for the caffeine to kick in.
Caden chuckled as he thought about that for a moment, what silly mind games our minds play on us he thought to himself “but what great mind games they are” he said to himself as he smiled to no one in particular.
Waiting for the coffee to take effect Caden stepped off the side walk surrounding the store and onto the grass in the direction of one of the picnic tables nearby, which luck would have it were strategically placed close to and around the store so visitors could enjoy the view while eating or resting before continuing their trip. When he arrived at his destination he set his coffee down on the table and unfolded the map he had purchased and laid it out across the table.
The map folded up was only 9 inches by 4 inches and had the picture off a mountain covered at the top with snow and rock, below the mountain were trees, lots and lots of trees, and in front of those trees was what looked like a grassy meadow covered in blooming flowers, the sky in the image was blue and clear with only a few clouds off in the distance behind the mountain, the image was the perfect image if you were trying to entice someone to come visit, though if you asked the creator of the map Caden was sure they would say that the view wasn’t always a guarantee.
Once Caden unfolded the map on the table he found it was roughly 27 inches by 24 inches making it small compared to other maps he had seen over the years. As he inspected it further he could clearly see that it wasn’t your standard road map, and it looked rather confusing at first glance what with its squiggly lines and roughly marked landmarks that seemed to encircle the area instead of lead away. In the center there was a white object shaped to look like a mountain from a birds eye view, around it there were different icons with labels next to them representing different landmarks. To the top right was a box with similar icons with text explaining what they were, this of course was the legend to the map, the scale for distance was located at the bottom right.
Frustrated Caden let go of the map “Darn it.” he said to himself shaking his head as he said it, in his sleepy blurry eyed state he had managed to purchase the wrong map. “Serves me right for not drinking my coffee first.” he finished as he let go of the map and grabbed his coffee to take another sip.
